Tekniker is the biggest of the Technological Centers forming the IK4 Research Allience. It was founded in 1981 and presently has a staff of more than 250 people composed mostly by Doctors, Engineers and Science graduates. Its main point of specialization is Manufacturing. During its lifetime Tekniker has been very active in research in Europe, as it has been involved in more than one hundred european projects.

Among many other capabilities, Tekniker has excelled in the manufacturing of special machines mostly for scientific purposes, including equipment for the deposition of Thin Coatings by Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), that in some cases have been productive and industrial. The Surface Physics and Technology group has developed coatings for very different applications using those in-house made machines, including Photovoltaics, Solar Thermal, Tribology and Decorative coatings, and holds several patents in those fields of application.

In the field of Photovoltaics, Ik4-Tekniker has developed Thin Film CIGS PV cells by the two step process that are deposited using mostly high vacuum technologies, including sputtering and evaporation in vacuum, in a way that is very similar to that used by some of the leaders in the field, for example, Solar Frontier.
